Timeline Project Part 1
Timeline Project Part 1
In this first lesson of Unit 5, students work in groups to create a timeline of from the big bang to present day. In this "Part 1" students also explore factors impacting natural climate change. In "Part 2" which begins Unit 6, students will add in factors of anthropogenic or human caused climate change.

Introduction to Climate Change Notes
Introduction to Climate Change Notes
Students take notes on reading that introduces 4 systems scientists use to classify the Earth. This assignment is homework but we spent about 10 minutes in class going over the directions so the expectations about the notes was clear. The notes were needed in order to do the second half of the Timeline Part 1 project. An exemplar note sheet is included in the directions.

Timeline Reflection
Timeline Reflection
Students use the timelines they created to answer essential questions and to reflect on their work in a team.

Hydrosphere Lab
Hydrosphere Lab
Students are challenged to survive on an island with no fresh water. To do so, they brainstorm ideas and then engineer their own solar stills. They relate the lab work they do to the hydrosphere and identify the parts of the water cycle in their stills. They also measure the salinity of the water using a refractometer.

Climate Stations
Climate Stations
Students in groups of 2-3 move throughout 7 different climate stations. At each station, students are asked questions related to each of Earth's systems. Through the demos and hands on activities students begin to make connections between the different Earth systems.

Zooming Into Earth's Systems
Zooming Into Earth's Systems
Students form groups with their peers who live in the same town as them. Students first interview each other to fill in the left half of the graphic organizer. Students then use resources provided and interviews with family, friends, and other teachers to complete the right half of each organizer.

Trifold Project
Trifold Project
Students build off of Part 1 and Part 2 assignments to make Tri-Fold boards to display at STEAM Night. The boards highlight the different Earth systems in their towns and make connections between them. At STEAM Night they interview people about their towns and ask questions about climate change which will lead into the next unit.

Introduction to Biosphere
Introduction to Biosphere
A guest speaker comes to talk with students about the role of a forester. She also brings in her scat and foot collection for students to examine. This opportunity was funded through a grant.

Nature Journal Entry #10
Nature Journal Entry #10
Students take all the information they have learned through the unit and take it outside. In NJE#10 students work with the guest forester and in groups to explore the biosphere of the forest surrounding the school.
